Barbate at the Costa de la Luz is a small town mainly living of the traditional tuna fishing which has not changed within the last centuries. The up to 3m long tunas are still being caught by using huge nets between various boats, and at last by hand.

The beautiful beach and plenty of fantastic fish restaurants along the Barbate beach promenade compensate the modern block buildings. Some people here still use the old name of "Barbate de Franco" - resulting from the fact that the former Spanish dictator Franco used to spend his summer vacations in Barbate.

Barbate's highlights are to be found in its surroundings. Little bays covered by steep cliffs, endless white sandy beaches and large pine woods provide an authentical view into the beautiful Andalusian wilderness. The natural park of La Breña invites to some extended hikes or bicycle tours.

One of the major arguments to spend a holiday in Barbate is its great nightlife attracting thousands of young people in the summer months. The day time on the beach is being used to recover from night time activities.

Don't forget to visit one of the traditional Bodegas in Barbate to try the famouse ham of the black Andalusian pigs, the fantastic Manchego cheese and, of course, some of the local fish specialities. Whine from the region or a glass of Sherry from the near by town of Jerez de la Frontera will round up this great culinaric experience.

Barbate earned its reputation for being a popular beach side resort not only for its great beaches but also for its exiting nightlife offers.

The evening starts in the beach bars (Chiringuitos) which don't close before the early morning. Later at night people move to the clubs to dance until the sun comes up.

Riding on an Andalusian horse along the beach into the sunset is a fantastic experience! Horses for rent and guided tours can be organized in Barbate.

Surfing in Barbate - Spots, beach and conditions

Barbate at the Costa de la Luz is one of the best spots to catch waves on the entire coast.

Yerbabuena is the name of the cape on the right end of the Barbate bay. When the swell is coming from the south-west then this is the best spot to look for quality waves.

Be careful entering the water!  There are stones that could cut your feet while entering or leaving the water. Once your in the deeper water, this spot is not dangerous.

Some kilometers further up the coast in direction Cadiz you can find waves in Caños de Meca or in El Palmar that will work well even if there's no waves in Barbate.

Golf near Barbate - the best Golf courses in Europe

One of the finest golf resorts in Europe is the Dehesa Montenmedio Golf & Country Club. This beautiful golf course is not situated right by the sea, so you might prefer to reside in one of the comfortable holiday apartments in Barbate and drive the 17km to Montenmedio for playing golf.

Besides this one there are many more superb golf clubs around Barbate. Combine the best of these clubs to have the Andalusian golf vacations of your life time!

Thanks to the climate, the golf season never ends in Andalusia and even in January you can play in thin clothing.

Here some more recommendations for golf clubs in Andalusia:

  2. Sancti Petri Golf

The beaches of Barbate

Playa de Carmen

The city beach in Barbate is called Playa de Carmen and attracts mostly young people who look for sun, beach and nightlife.

Bars and restaurants are open all day long and can be found just a few meters away along the beach promenade. It is all about meeting people on the beach and making appointments for the next evening to go out together.

The beach is being watched from life-saving-towers to assure the safety of swimmers. There are showers and toilets at the beach promenade.

Playa Yerbabuena

This beach is situated on the right side of the port of Barbate, just a 10min foot walk away from the promenade. Due to the fact that most tourists stay on the Playa de Carmen, Yerbabuena is never crowded.

Here you will find no beach bars, but the beach is still maintened in its natural beauty. Surrounded by tall cliffs and pine woods you will encounter a true and authentic Andalusian paradise.

Surfers love Yerbabuena for its great pointbreak wave infront of the Cape at the right end of the bay.

Climate & Weather in Barbate

While temperatures in the summer at the Andalusian coast are comfortably warm, it may be unbearably hot just 20km further in the country. Seville, for example, is used to have above 40°C every day while on the coast you only feel 25°C.

In winter time it hardly gets any colder than 16°C, except for the nights which could end up being around 10°C. The temperatures also depend on the wind direction: Levante brings warmer air from the land, Poniente brings cool air form the sea.

The average humidity in summer is around 30%, in the winter it is above 50%.

The probability of rain is very low apart from January until April. Statistically the Costa de la Luz provides more than 300 days of sunshine per year. In fact, rain is always welcome to assure the water supply in the dry summer months.
